SUMMARY:On Local Ecologies: Artist Roundtable on Exhibiting 'Art and Ecology' in / for / from a University
\nRoundtable Abstract:In the country\, earlier attempts at exhibiting art guided by ecological consciousness can be traced back to the 1970s\, a period that witnessed a notable growth in environmentalism. Around half a century forward\, more art exhibitions led and hosted locally have sought to tease out and underscore the ties between art and ecology. These tapped on the potential of art in surfacing the impact of humanity on the environment and in raising climate awareness. In the same vein\, institutions and other groups began to examine or further reexamined their ways of working in response to the challenges of environmental sustainability. This roundtable finds its position within this landscape by asking: What is added when we forward art as a proposition to ecological discourses through an exhibition situated in\, for\, and/or from a university? The University is a setting that is poised to offer a compelling perspective and starting point given its potential to be a progressive site of knowledge co-production despite inherent contradictions presented by the bureaucracies and conventions it tends to maintain as an institution. This potential rests in how the institution can flesh out and engender intergenerational exchanges and collaborations amongst its diverse disciplinal grounds and communities. More specifically\, the session asks: What can the unique contours of the University of the Philippines Diliman—its institutional history\, physical environment\, communities\, legacies\, and present affairs—contribute to these ongoing conversations? Drawing from the idea of “local ecologies\,” the forum shall see the university as both a microcosm intrinsically linked with broader environmental systems\, and a distinct ecosystem in its own right. Taking this as a frame for understanding the UPD community\, the forum brings together artists Dayang Yraola\, Karl Castro\, and Isola Tong\, who recently participated in the exhibition “Kalikhasan: Outdoor Art Projects on Campus Ecology” that ran from February to June this year. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the experience of conceiving and mounting outdoor and site-specific artworks that resonate with ecological discourses within and beyond the university\, as they intersected with longstanding conversations on politics\, class\, and gender.

SUMMARY:Kanlungan at Kasarinlan: An arts and science exhibit on the West Philippine Sea
DESCRIPTION:The West Philippine Sea (WPS) cradles ecosystems rich in marine biodiversity\, sustaining countless coastal communities in the Philippines and the greater Western Pacific Ocean. However\, tensions and conflicts over territorial claims have plagued the region for decades. This exhibition aims to showcase the beauty and significance of the WPS while advocating for a strong stance on defending our sovereign rights\, pursuing peaceful resolution of maritime disputes\, and protecting our natural heritage. \nThrough the lens of science and art\, the exhibition explores the complexities of the contested waters of the WPS. The University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI) has been at the forefront of scientific research\, uncovering the rich marine life and environmental complexities of the region. Complementing this scientific perspective\, the exhibition weaves together reproductions of historical maps\, and contemporary artworks that highlight both the stunning beauty of our marine heritage and the geopolitical challenges we face. \nAdditionally\, the exhibition includes earlier artworks from the collections of UP Diliman\, reminding us of our nation’s long struggle for sovereignty and our collective responsibility to conserve and protect nature. By bringing together these diverse materials\, the exhibition demonstrates UP MSI’s commitment to collectively learning and telling stories of the West Philippine Sea – its life\, its challenges\, and our enduring connection to it. Kilalanin natin\, alagaan\, at ipaglaban natin.

SUMMARY:Remounting of "Kalahating Siglo ng Daluyong"

SUMMARY:Doing Collections Management in the Government Sector: A Brownbag Session
DESCRIPTION:The specificities of working in the government sector shape the various possibilities on how cultural work\, specifically collections management\, can be performed by its practitioners. Various factors—such as strategic mandates\, organizational structures\, legal processes\, property management\, financial constraints\, and the like—oftentimes dictate how museum workers see and treat the collections that their institutions own or keep. This brownbag session gathers representatives (curators\, registrars\, collections officers\, faculty-in-charge\, and the like) from the different museums in the university that handle\, care for\, and exhibit artworks to discuss common issues faced and current practices performed in response to or in navigation around these. Various museums from the other constituent units and other government agencies with art collections were also invited in this session to learn more about various ways-of-working in different contexts.

SUMMARY:Pagsibol at Pagpapalalim: A Gathering of Stories on the Bulwagan ng Dangal
DESCRIPTION:The Bulwagan ng Dangal University Heritage Museum\, with the support of the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts and the UP Diliman Information Office\, proudly presents the premiere of it’s fifteenth anniversary video feature entitled Pagsibol at Pagpapalalim: A Gathering of Stories on the Bulwagan ng Dangal. \nThe gathering of stories traces the history of the institution from its beginnings as a Centennial project to what it is today as an open and dynamic platform for various modes of display and discourse. This gesture sketches the museum’s shift from being a space that reared a more institutional notion of “heritage” (institutional history\, architecture\, significant personalities\, and the like)\, towards being a more participative venue for identity construction and presentation\, and alternative historicization of its community/ies (tradition of protest through time\, various advocacies\, communities in the fringes\, and the like). \nStemming from it being the first museum in the country that has been deliberately conceived to dwell on the concept of “university heritage\,” the Bulwagan ng Dangal aims to highlight in the video feature how the concept of “heritage” is mediated by the nature of the university as an academic institution that is meant to teach and research\, and the vision for UP as the state university that is meant to serve Philippine society.

SUMMARY:Above the Fold: Pages of the Philippine Collegian Under Marcos Regime
DESCRIPTION:The Philippine Collegian (Kulê) and the UP Diliman Bulwagan ng Dangal University Heritage Museum (BnD) are launching the exhibition “Above the Fold: Pages of the Philippine Collegian Under Marcos Regime.” By examining selected materials published by the university’s official student publication from years prior the proclamation of Martial Law in the country until the ousting of the dictator in 1986\, the exhibit aims to demonstrate how the student publication can be considered a contested site of various players\, vulnerable and at the same time resistant to the manipulation of the dictatorial regime and its agents.

SUMMARY:Kaloob-Sining Biswal: Mga Likha ng mga Artista-Iskolar ng UP Diliman
DESCRIPTION:Ang paglikha ay isang daluyan at lagusan ng pagtuklas\, pagsisiyasat\, pagpapalalim\, pagpapahayag\, at pagtindig.

SUMMARY:Sining Protesta: Imahe at Tema\, Anyo at Pagkilos

SUMMARY:Engkwentro: Sa(lay)say ng Diliman Commune (Virtual Exhibit)

SUMMARY:Looking for Juan 10: "What Does it Mean to be a Filipino?"
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a Filipino?’ This is the question that CANVAS and more than a hundred contemporary Filipino participating artists grapple with in the 10th Looking for Juan Outdoor Banner Show\, opening on August 18\, 4pm\, at the Bulwagan ng Dangal in the University of the Philippines-Diliman. \nThe group show revisits the theme and question for CANVAS’ very first outdoor banner show in 2009. We wonder if the answers would change – if being a Filipino in 2018 would be different from or the same as it was a decade before. What results is a collection of paintings and sculptures depicting each artist’s reflections on and response to the question.

SUMMARY:Linescapes: Aestheticizing Chaos of Urban Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:In this MFA degree exhibition\, Annie Pacaña explores the layers of meanings encrypted in the city’s urban forms as she explores linescapes\, kaleidoscapes and soundscapes. Here\, a flattening of the city is explored through photography and drawing\, and set into motion via digital media\, which are the proponent’s tools as a visual communicator. Even the city’s soundscape\, its pulse\, its irregular heartbeat\, is a multi-layered waveform creating an interference – a disruption\, a disturbance\, a displacement\, whose chaos one can come to appreciate. All the images utilized are culled from the proponent’s own travels around Metro Manila in the course of her study from 2015\, reflecting her accumulating and compounding connection with the city as she traverses it day by day on foot\, by car\, or by train.

SUMMARY:Super Robot – Suffer Reboot
DESCRIPTION:The 70’s was a decade that expanded humanity’s horizons. In outer space\, Viking 2 lands on Mars. The world’s first test tube baby is born. Personal computers and mobile phones make their debut. Atari finds its way to many homes. Microsoft and Apple are founded. Betamax is introduced. Star Wars captures the imagination of a generation. And super robots like Voltes V\, Daimos\, Mazinger Z\, Mekanda Robo\, appear on Philippine state-controlled television. Filipino children learn to sing their Japanese theme songs by heart\, probably more so than the patriotic anthems of the Bagong Lipunan. \nThe 70’s was also a tumultuous decade. The Beatles break up. Elvis Presley dies. The Vietnam War ends. The Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge take over Cambodia. The Jonestown Incident happens. Nixon resigns after being implicated in the Watergate Scandal. Harvey Milk\, an openly gay politician\, gets elected into office\, and is soon after assassinated. In the Philippines\, martial law is declared. The short lived Diliman Commune happens as a response to the rising cost of fuel. People talk about a boy who fell from the sky\, being thrown from a helicopter as payment for his father’s expose. A youth leader is found dead two days after he openly questions the legitimacy and credentials of the President’s daughter to head the Kabataang Baranggay in a public forum. Many others disappear. Countless others land in jail. The super robots are pulled off air after a year. A generation of children question what could be wrong\, when these super robots represent the good triumphing over tyranny and evil. \nThis is the backdrop to a young boy’s coming of age\, which becomes the material for Super Robot – Suffer Reboot\, a collection of nearly a decade’s work of Toym Imao where a curious mix of robots\, dictators\, and martial law begs the question\, does history repeat itself?

SUMMARY:Kahayupan
DESCRIPTION:This MFA exhibit revolves around the notion that animals have been used as bisual metaphors for commentary of society’s ills. From the European Medieval Beastiaries\, or bound text featuring stories teaching morality to the modern political cartoons of utilizing animal figures to liken either the brazen to the problematic\, this MFA study aims to produce a visual sequential narrative of presidential faults reminiscent of Christianity’s Seven Deadly Sins. The seven presidents starting from the Marcoses reflect the duration of administration the proponent has lived and is living through to juxtapose the personal and the political. The proponent is a practicing political cartoonist\, hence the MFA study shall be rendering magnification of comics strips-type of narration\, wherein each panel holds a deadly sin and their causalities and implications. Though each panel is inherently separate and can stand alone\, the MFA study aims to render these panels as a disturbing panorama of interconnected blighted political landscapes that we have gone and we are going through.

SUMMARY:Stopover!
DESCRIPTION:Four artists from the U.P. Master of Fine Arts program in their FA 211 class critically explore and analyze their own art practice by producing ekphrastic artworks in their show entitled Stopover. Stopover is defined as a stop at an intermediate point in one’s journey and this exhibit emphasizes each artists’ unique perspective as they explore their own life journey as artists dealing with couple-hood\, motherhood\, childhood\, and family-hood all at the same time. While Aisa Dela Cruz’s work questions society’s idea of marriage\, motherhood\, and starting a family\, Weena Espardinez’s work on the other hand is an introspective look on her domestic experience when she was a young mother with toddlers. Jake Salvador’s work deals with the creation of a wooden scooter inspired by a childhood memory while Jenny Suarez would like to explore creating a play space for adults using toy building blocks—both artworks and installations hope to trigger happy and uncomplicated memories that they want to relive and experience as adults\, now that they both have their own kids. Stopover highlights the different stages in their lives as they look back and reflect on their past that helped define their realities now.

SUMMARY:Sandaang Taon ng Aghamtao / 100 Years of Philippine Anthropology
DESCRIPTION:From its institution in the Philippines\, the discipline of anthropology participated in shaping colonial policy and engaged the public specifically in the conceptualization of the ‘peoples of the Philippines’\, shaping the way we define ourselves (the nation\, distinct ethnicities) and ‘others’.  The proposed exhibit presents a timeline of 100 years of Philippine anthropology\, and also features ‘100 personalities’ who have been influential to anthropological practice\, i.e. not necessarily only those who specifically self-identified as anthropologists\, and ranging from even before 1917\, e.g. Isabelo de los Reyes and ilustrado contributions\, to more recent luminaries.  Intellectual contributions and turning points in the history of anthropology in the Philippines (not just in U.P.) would be highlighted.  Also to be marked or showcased in the exhibit will be the archaeological and ethnographic collections of the UP Anthropology Museum.  The exhibit is researched and curated in consultation with the faculty of the UP Anthropology Department.
