Kanlungan at Kasarinlan: An arts and science exhibit on the West Philippine Sea

October 22December 13

The West Philippine Sea (WPS) cradles ecosystems rich in marine biodiversity, sustaining countless coastal communities in the Philippines and the greater Western Pacific Ocean. However, tensions and conflicts over territorial claims have plagued the region for decades. This exhibition aims to showcase the beauty and significance of the WPS while advocating for a strong stance on defending our sovereign rights, pursuing peaceful resolution of maritime disputes, and protecting our natural heritage.

Through the lens of science and art, the exhibition explores the complexities of the contested waters of the WPS. The University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UP MSI) has been at the forefront of scientific research, uncovering the rich marine life and environmental complexities of the region. Complementing this scientific perspective, the exhibition weaves together reproductions of historical maps, and contemporary artworks that highlight both the stunning beauty of our marine heritage and the geopolitical challenges we face.

Additionally, the exhibition includes earlier artworks from the collections of UP Diliman, reminding us of our nation’s long struggle for sovereignty and our collective responsibility to conserve and protect nature. By bringing together these diverse materials, the exhibition demonstrates UP MSI’s commitment to collectively learning and telling stories of the West Philippine Sea – its life, its challenges, and our enduring connection to it.

Atin ang West Philippine Sea, kanlungan ng saribuhay. Kilalanin natin, alagaan, at ipaglaban natin.
